Maria Chen

Maria Chen is a partner at the Asian arts platform CNTRFLD.ART and the creative design consultancy CNTRFLD.STUDIO, a subsidiary of the bi-annual arts and fashion publication Centrefold Magazine. She is recognised as the feminine face of modern conceptual fashion, seamlessly merging contemporary art, culture, and applied arts throughout her career.

Inspired by the resilient women she admired during her childhood in Taiwan, Maria immersed herself in illustration and art, laying the foundation for her future in fashion. From the inception of her namesake brand, she transformed printing and textiles, pioneering upcycling and reconstruction techniques. As an early advocate for gender-inclusive style, she crafted a timeless, individualised aesthetic.

Throughout her career, Maria has held leadership roles with global brands such as Calvin Klein, Giorgio Armani, The Gap, AllSaints, and French Connection, bringing her unique vision to a broader audience.

In the early 1990s, Maria was awarded the Hermes menswear bursary and went on to earn an MA from Central Saint Martins, where she was mentored by Louise Wilson (OBE). She furthered her studies with a doctorate in contemporary arts and fashion at the Royal College of Art. Her eponymous label earned her recognition as a Jerwood Design Award finalist and made her the first Taiwanese woman to receive the British Fashion Council NewGen award at London Fashion Week.

Maria’s recent work reflects a rediscovery of drawing, where she continues to refine her minimalist aesthetic, drawing inspiration from Asian art. She is dedicated to fostering dialogue between design and art, championing a strong feminist voice within her creative philosophy, and contributing passionately to both communities. Recently, Maria joined the board of trustees at esea contemporary, further expanding her influence in the arts. Maria Chen is a fashion luminary, symbolising the bridge across diverse artistic realms.
